Clouded leopards are disappearing from their native ranges in Asia due to deforestation, commercial poaching for illegal trade in parts, and the pet trade.  Habitat fragmentation of the existing populations has led to genetic isolation.  Zoo Miami contributed to the Thailand Clouded Leopard Breeding Project based at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand.  This program aims to coordinate an international effort to establish a genetically viable captive breeding population of this vulnerable listed species.  The funds are used to help expand and upgrade staff and facilities at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo to establish a base for the program in the catís native range.
