Zoo Miami contributed funds towards Dr. Byron Wilson of the University of West Indies survey of Jamaican amphibians.  There have been global declines in amphibian populations and habitat loss on such islands as Jamaica.  Six of the twenty one known native species of frogs in Jamaica have not been recorded by science for more than a decade.  This survey hopes to not only document the occurrence and abundance of these species but survey for the presence of pathogenic fungus and viruses that have led to mass extinctions in other parts of the world.  Dr. Wilson’s research will help guide conservation and possible recovery goals for the species that reside there.
