Komodo Dragon SSP/ Conservation, Indonesia

Komodo dragon SSP manages captive population. Zoo Miami made a major contribution by hatching 27 dragons, which have been sent to other zoos in North America and Europe. In 1998, our Komodo dragons produced 27 live hatchlings, making Zoo Miami only the third zoo outside of Indonesia to have bred these endangered lizards.
Zoo Miami has funded field studies on genetics and demographics of wild dragons. Zoo Miami's General Curator and other Zoo staff members traveled to Komodo National Park and assisted with population survey and identified future areas in need of funding. In collaboration with several zoos, the Komodo dragon species survival plan (SSP), the Nature Conservancy and Yale University.
