The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Ape Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) Conservation Initiative is a collaborative effort by zoos started in 2010 to help conserve wild ape populations.  In 2010, the Zoological Society of Florida donated towards this general fund to be distributed among many vital projects.  HUTAN, a non-profit conservation group, concentrates on developing and researching innovative techniques to conserve the orangutan in Malaysia.  HUTAN received a grant from the Ape TAG Conservation Initiative in 2010.  In 1998, the Kinabatangan Orang-utan Conservation Project was formed in conjunction with the Sabah Wildlife Department in the Kinabatangan wetlands, Sabah.  They are currently studying the adaptation of orangutans in secondary growth forests of the area.  Traditional thoughts were that orangutans could only survive in old growth forests but their research may be changing that thought and thus changing some conservation strategies of the region.
