Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico - American Flamingo

For over a decade, some Zoo Miami bird keepers receive educational leave from the Zoo and venture down to Mexico every year on their own dime to participate in conservation of the American Flamingo. The organization, Niños Y Crias, gathers volunteers to band at least 8% of each year’s flamingo chicks at a large nesting site to enable tracking of population numbers, chick survivability, migration patterns and habitat use. Many local inhabitants participate in the program and this helps raise awareness about habitat and flamingo conservation in the area. The organization conducts a monthly census of the populations in the coastal areas and takes measures to secure the suitability of the nesting sites through habitat preservation.
