Sumatra - Sumatran Rhinoceros

Sumatra - Sumatran Rhinoceros

Zoo Miami supports the International Rhino Foundation (IRF) in its efforts in recovery of the declining population of Sumatran Rhinos in Sumatra, Indonesia, of which only about 160 remain.  The IRF focuses its efforts around the surrounding areas of the Way Kambas and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Parks.  The Sumatran Rhino population suffers from deforestation, habitat fragmentation and poaching in this area but there has only been one documented poaching event in the last 5 years largely due to the heroic efforts of the Rhino Protection Units that patrol the region.  The IRF also works with local populations to raise awareness, educate and involve the local inhabitants about rhino conservation.
