Virunga Volcanoes Massif, Africa - Mountain and Eastern Lowland Gorillas

Zoo Miami supports the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) in its efforts to treat sick, injured and orphaned Mountain and Eastern Lowland Gorillas in the national parks of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  This project consists of a team of experienced veterinarians that provide direct hands on care for gorillas in need in these areas.  With less than 800 mountain gorillas left in the world, each one is vital to the health and genetic survivability of the species.  The project also partners with the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center to help ensure the health and well-being of the people and their animals surrounding these important habitats since their health can directly effect the gorilla populations.  Gorillas still suffer from poaching and habitat loss but infectious diseases are emerging as possibly the greatest threat to their survival.
