The Cao Vit Gibbon, or Eastern Black Crested Gibbon, is one of the rarest apes in the world.  Only a little over 100 individuals are known to exist in an area around the borders of Vietnam and China.  The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Ape Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) Conservation Initiative is a collaborative effort by zoos started in 2010 to help conserve wild ape populations.  In 2010, the Zoological Society of Florida donated towards this general fund to be distributed among many vital projects.  A grant was awarded to conduct long-term ecological research and conservation approaches to help this critically endangered gibbon in China.  This habitat is also home to many other imperiled species.  Efforts are being made to adjoin protected areas on both sides of the border and reduce fuelwood extraction from the area.  Since these populations of gibbons were discovered in the 2000’s, there is a lot to learn about their habitat and needs in order to know how best to preserve them.
