Ocala National Forest, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission - Striped Newt
A cooperative effort between the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) conducts annual surveys to assess the population and health of Striped Newts. This annual event that spans many days has been deemed Newtfest. Zoo Miami staff, Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens staff, many volunteers, students, representatives from many government agencies and universities and have participated in the surveys. There is a petition to list this species as threatened with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to their observed decline. These surveys help to locate existing populations, discover new ones and shape the USFS management plans to protect the species.
