Tunisia - Addax, Tunisian Antelope Reintroduction
The Addax was extripated from most of its historic range by the end of the last century. Many efforts by individual countries and the Addax Species Survival Plan (SSP) have begun reintroduction programs in North Africa. Zoo Miami has held and successfully bred Addax that has contributed to the captive population. The current population estimates of wild Addax is around 500 individuals. The SSP is working with the Tunisian government to transport captive Addax for reintroduction into protected areas in their country. Funding provided by participating institutions like Zoo Miami provides for costs associated with transportation, monitoring and fencing involved with these efforts.
