Urban Advantage Miami is a communitywide partnership between Zoo Miami, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Miami Science Museum and the Miami-Dade County Public School System that connects middle school students with meaningful and interactive, standards-based scientific discovery.

Participating Schools Receive:

  • Funding for a field expedition (entrance fees and transportation) to one of the three institutions
  • Customized curriculum resource tied to M-DCPS Pacing Guide for Comprehensive Science 2
  • Coverage for substitute teachers
  • One professional development experience for the participating teachers
At the core of the fully developed Urban Advantage Miami model is the intention to provide the targeted schools with the resources and support necessary to create the next generation of highly qualified scientists and innovative, critical thinkers.  Urban Advantage Miami is designed to improve science literacy among M-DCPS middle school students by implementing six interrelated components (strategies) that support science teaching and inquiry:
  1. Professional Development for Teachers and Administrators;
  2. Classroom Materials and Resources;
  3. Access to UA Miami Institutions;
  4. Outreach to Families;
  5. Capacity Building; and
  6. Program Assessment and Student Learning.
