Elephants are a very sensitive topic today because of what incredibly majestic and intelligent animals they are. Some recent isolated incidences concerning substandard care and conflicts with elephants have led to some protests developed to attack all institutions with elephants, painting the entire issue with a very broad brush rather than looking at the majority of accredited institutions that do an outstanding job of caring for these wonderful animals while helping to educate the public about the incredible challenges they are facing and how we can all help insure their survival for generations to come.
Zoo Miami has been voted one of the top zoos in the country for housing elephants on large, open-air exhibits with natural terrain and in social groups. We are presently home to the oldest and one of the largest Asian bull elephants in the country. Dalip, a 45 year old male arrived at the old Crandon Park Zoo in the 1960ís and has grown into one of the most magnificent elephants anyone has ever seen while also becoming a father and maintaining relationships with females. We urge you to come out to the zoo and look at our elephants for yourself. You will see relaxed, healthy animals enjoying their large exhibits with full sized pools, natural terrain, and a carefully planned enrichment program that enables them to be stimulated and active. We are very proud of our elephant program and the opportunities that it presents for countless people to learn and be inspired by these amazing pachyderms. We hope you will be too.
